Suspension Importance
Two components of your suspension system that need to be monitored for functionality are your shocks and struts. These components keep your vehicle balanced and riding smoothly with all four wheels getting good contact with the road or surface you are driving on. Your shocks and struts should be inspected once or twice a year to ensure they are still effective wherever you drive. If your shocks or struts are blown, this will likely affect your vehicle’s ability to handle safely on the roads.
How Does the Suspension System Work?
Your vehicle’s suspension comprises several components aside from the shocks and struts. It also includes a set of springs that absorb bumps and road impact. Then, you have your struts that support the springs, and shock absorbers (shocks) that are designed to limit the bounce of the car by absorbing residual movement in the suspension springs. If the shocks and struts are not working properly, a pothole, a gravel road, or an otherwise rough surface can cause your wheels to bounce off the road. This can lead to a loss of control and potentially a collision with other vehicles on the road or objects off the road.
Replacing Shocks and Struts
Well-maintained shocks and struts are critical to your safety and the safety of others. It is recommended to have your shocks and struts serviced regularly before any issues develop. Signs and Symptoms of Needed Shock and Strut Replacement
- Vehicle bouncing excessively.
- Nose diving when coming to a stop.
- Swaying or leaning excessively when changing lanes or turning corners.
- Your ride seems stiff, and not bouncing enough.
- Odd sounds when steering or steering response is poor.
- Feelings of instability at high speeds.
Visibly Noticeable Signs and Symptoms of Shock or Strut Replacement
- Tires unevenly worn or with noticeable flat areas.
- Fluid leakage is evident from shocks or struts.
- Bodies of shocks or struts show denting or other visible damage.
- Mounts or bushings are corroded, broken, or otherwise damaged.
